Salmoncain Smith-Shomade’s story of how he decided to study journalism is just as unique as his name. Smith-Shomade is a native of Decatur, Ga., a town northeast of Atlanta. He decided to take his academic talents to George Washington University. He originally wanted to attend a historically Black university. However, he earned a scholarship offered by The Posse Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships for students to attend partner universities in the United States – including GWU. Smith-Shomade hopes to study industrial engineering and he credits the NABJ JSHOP curriculum for introducing him to journalism.
